The Department of Theatre Arts in the College of Arts and Sciences invites nominations and applications for Department Chair. Howard University, classified as a doctoral/research institution by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, is a comprehensive research university and a Historically Black College/University (HBCU). It is a residential campus of more than 10,000 students located in the heart of the nation’s capital, Washington, DC.

The Howard University Department of Theatre Arts is seeking a dynamic and passionate Chairman who will lead the Department into the next chapter of growth and impact. The Department consists of 24 faculty including 7 full-time professors of various ranks, 6 full-time lecturers, 8 adjuncts, 3 artists-in-residence, and 4 staff members. It offers a B.F.A. degree with concentrations in Dance, Acting, Theatre Arts Administration, Musical Theatre, and Theatre Technology. Faculty members are dedicated and extremely active in their professions. The Department has historically developed and produced the most outstanding talent on stage, screen, and television, and is highly regarded nationally and internationally.

Position Description

The position is at the rank of Full Professor, or the candidate must possess the qualifications to be appointed at the rank of Full Professor. The Chair directly reports to the Associate Dean of Fine Arts and the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The Chair serves on the Dean’s Advisory Council with responsibility for the administration of the Department and support for the College. The position is a 12-month appointment. The preferred starting date is July 1, 2017. The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Like other faculty members, the Chair is expected to be an artist/scholar engaged in artistic productions and/or scholarship, devoted to excellence in teaching and learning, and committed to professional service. The candidate is expected to have experience with, or interest in, working in diverse academic, artistic, and professional communities with a special emphasis on the African American community. The ability to make a contribution to the work environment in the Department, College, and University is also expected as well as a strong orientation to recruiting, advising, retaining, and mentoring qualified students.

Major Responsibilities

• Enunciate a vision for the Department. • Maintain a climate that attracts, motivates and retains a diverse body of high quality, energetic, enthusiastic, faculty and staff.
• Assure that the Department maintains sound financial practices through budget management and general oversight of financial functions.
• Serve as Producer/Artistic Director for all Theatre Arts productions.
• Be the chief spokesperson and advocate for the Department, including faculty, students, and staff, in College and University affairs.
• Identify and pursue external funding for the Department.
• Work with university administration to ensure that adequate funds are available to permit the Theatre Arts Department to carry out its work.
• Guide the Department in long range planning including a Bachelor of Arts degree and a future graduate program.
• Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field of the performing arts.
• Establish a network of partnerships with international, national, and local theatres, and arts organizations.
• Strengthen national and international engagement with alumni.
• Increase Department prominence nationally.

Required Qualifications

• M.F.A. or Ph.D. in one of, or a combination of, any of the five concentration areas offered by the department: Acting, Dance, Theatre Technology, Musical Theatre, or Theatre Arts Administration.
• Knowledge/experience, and sensitivity in all areas of the discipline.
• Record of creative works and/or scholarship, teaching, and professional service commensurate with the rank of Full Professor;
• Evidence of administrative experience;
• Experience in the development and management of academic programs;
• Collaborative leadership style with an appreciation for the principles of shared governance;
• Evidence of successful engagement with the community outside of the University;
• Evidence of successful grant writing/fundraising experience;
• Ability to promote a healthy environment among faculty, staff, and students.

Preferred Qualifications

• Substantial record of performance experience;
• National recognition for creative and/or scholarly expertise.
